Spring Maintenance – Fixing the faults on a 1977 Silver Shadow II

Replacing Power Steering Low Pressure Hose

With the warmer weather on us at the Kansas/Missouri border, it is time to address the issues the car had when it was parked for the winter.  It had and has a power steering leak which is covered in this posting.  This will leave the remaining work of replacing the gear shift selector seal and repairing the right rear window lift issue and any other problem that shows up going forward.

Remove the clip from the lower portion of the hose.

Pictures and captions describe the removal of the low  pressure power steering hose that runs from the power steering cooler line down to the power steering rack.  This was where my leak occurred.  I had previously changed the coupling hoses on the power steering cooler and the hose at the back of the power steering pump.

Replacement of Transmission Selector Shaft Seal

Very often this seal will be the source of the leakage from the transmission.  To rectify the leak, should you have one, remove the nut shown in photo 1 (click on photos for full view).  Remove the selector lever shown in photo 2 and clean out the old seal around the shaft shown in photo 3 using the tool in photo 7.

Fit the new seal shown in photo 4 and fit it to the shaft and housing shown in photos 5 & 6.  Tapping it in using the socket/driver shown in photos 8 & 9.  Replace lever as shown in photo 2 and fit nut as shown in photo 1.
